Uncle Tupelo | No Depression
Long before Wilco became the band that 30-somethings everywhere started swearing was the best thing since sliced bread, there was Uncle Tupelo. Fronted by Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) and Jay Farrar (Son Volt), these guys were alt-country trail blazers in an era when Nirvana and Pearl Jam owned the air waves. They were rocking pedal steel and twangy guitars way before it became hip enough to be embraced by dudes with mustache wax and waistcoats… and even though they all went on to do bigger things Uncle Tupelo was sadly under appreciated in their own time.
Tweedy and Farrar ended up resenting each other or some horse shit like that, so the band broke up… but No Depression has become regarded as one of the most important alt country albums of it’s time. If you’re a fan of Wilco or Jay Farrar and haven’t listened to Uncle Tupelo up to this point, I’d suggest checking out No Depression. It’s a pretty amazing album on all fronts. The song writing is top notch and despite the fact that they apparently hated each other, musically, Farrar and Tweedy compliment each other very well.
I’ve done my best to like Wilco over the years, and there are a handful of tunes that I like, but overall they just tend to be too mellow for me. Uncle Tupelo on the other hand is exactly what I want out of Jeff Tweedy. They were dirtier and looser. They sound like a bunch of guys playing in a garage and not like a band that 30-40 year olds go to see so they can smoke their one joint of the year and remember what it was like to not have kids
