Nikon reveals new D3300 and announces D4S
The bar to the entry level Nikon DSLR range has just been raised as Nikon revealed the D3300. Among the newest features it contains are the EXPEED 4 image processor, a 24-megapixel sensor without an optical low pass filter, and new smaller kit lens that comes included in the $650 package.
NIKON D3300
Even though this new model doesn’t look strikingly different from its predecessor the D3200, there are a number of key upgrades that differentiate the two. While they both have the same 24.2 megapixel count, the APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm) CMOS sensor in the new model has done away with the optical low-pass filter which will result in sharper images.
The new EXPEED 4 image-processing engine will not only speed things up but help improve image quality even at higher sensitivities. With that, the D3300 has an ISO range of 100 to 12,800 (up from the 6,400 of the D3200) which will greatly improve your low light photos. The new snappier image processing engine now allows for shooting stills at a burst speed of 5 fps, and can record Full HD 1080p videos at 60/50 fps.
Among the things that have not changed from last years model are the three-inch 921k dot LCD monitor on the back side which is unfortunately fixed and not of the tilting or rotating variety. Also the Multi-CAM 1000 auto focus sensor module with 11 focus points is still what you’ll find inside this years model. The Wifi module we saw in the D5300 has not yet made it way into this lower end unit, however the D3300 is compatible with the WU-1a wireless adapter for transferring images as well as remote shooting.
The new bundled AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55-mm F3.5-F5.6G VR II kit lens uses a retractable lens mechanism that allowed for its size to be reduced by a full thirty percent in comparison to their last 18-55-mm DX lens. The camera itself it also smaller and lighter as a result of a carbon fiber monocoque structure, similar to that of the D5300 while remaining every bit as durable as those made with heavier materials.
Due in February, the D3300 will ship in three colors. Black, red, and silver.
D4S
While Nikon isn’t giving away too much in the way of specifications, they have announced they’re preparing for the release of the D4S. They have revealed it will come with an all new image processing engine, produce better image quality, and improve on the autofocusing performance. Their now two year old flagship the D4 is about due for an upgrade and I for one can’t wait to use it.
