My Morning Jacket | It Still Moves
So I’m going to continue my trend of recommending albums that have been out for awhile and you’ve probably already heard of… but you know what fuck it.
So on that note….. I love this album. It Still Moves been in my top ten ever since the first time I listened to it. My Morning Jacket seems to be one of those bands that you either love or have never listened to. They’ve been getting more main stream attention in recent years but for the most part they’ve sort of flown under the radar. Which is ridiculous considering they’ve been pretty consistently putting out amazing albums since 1999. They’re also one of the best live rock bands out there right now.
Fig. 1Aside from having the voice of a sweet baby angel, front man Jim James also often dons a cape and prances about the stage like a mythical beast (See fig. 1). The last time I saw them, the prancing was so intense I was pretty sure I was watching a live action rendition of Beauty and the Beast. I know how that sounds…. but you had to be there because it was amazing. Had there been a candlestick man or a talking teapot I would have pissed myself with delight. Now maybe that’s not your scene… but fuck it that’s what I’m into. I’m not ashamed to admit it.
All that aside, It Still Moves is a great album on so many levels. It has the perfect mix of sweet ballads, folksy acoustic numbers and epic rock jams. This album was a real turning point for MMJ. It marked the beginning of their transformation from a mellower alt country band into something a bit more edgy and driving. The smooth, alt country sound that had defined them up until this point is still present but this time around there’s a lot more there. James’ lyrics and vocals are as good as ever but the diversity of the material and the overall instrumentation are off the charts. It’s an album that you have to digest to fully appreciate but trust me it’s worth the investment.
