Boston Concert Picks: 9/8 to 9/13
Congrats! You lived through another Labor Day. And if you’re me (which I know seems impossible) you’ve lived through another wedding too. Despite my best efforts to kill myself with an overindulgence of Jameson & Ginger as well as uncoordinated dancing to favorites like “Higher Love” and “I Want to Dance with Somebody”, here I am. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what live music there is to see this week in the lovely (angry) state of Massachusetts.
9/8 – Lou Barlow & T. Hardy Morris @ Great Scott, Allston – Barlow, one of the founding members of Dinosaur Jr and Sebadoh, will be playing a solo set. Cam admitted to listening to to Dinosaur Jr a lot lately which means either this guy really knows how to write good songs or Cam’s memory is fading quickly as he enters old age and just can’t remember anyone else to listen to. T Hardy Morris used to play in Dead Confederate which seems like a great excuse to carry a treasonous racist flag around Boston. Go ahead, live a little.
9/9 – Millencolin @ Brighton Music Hall – These Swedish punks are still playing after over 20 years. Their new album True Brew was released earlier this year and attacks the shitty right wing politics in Europe. Where are the American punk bands taking on the political clowns in this country? Well, if nothing else the recent GOP campaigns should provide some new material.
9/10 – Dengue Fever @ Brighton Music Hall – I’m recommending going back the next night for an entirely different music experience. I’m pretty sure everyone but their lead singer is American (Chhom Nimol is Cambodian) but they have a cool worldly sound. Just check them out and tell me you haven’t created a movie in your head to match these songs as its soundtrack.
9/11 – Death Cab for Cutie w/ Explosions in the Sky @ Blue Hills Pavillion, Boston – Never forget….that you should see Death Cab live when you have chance. For a band that is known for extremely sad and often quiet songs, they really do put on a good show. And Blue Hills isn’t a bad venue to go to one last time before summer is gone and a big tent by the water becomes a terrible place to see a concert.
9/13 – Open Blues Jam Featuring Matthew Smart @ Johnny D’s, Somerville – Why just go see some live music when you can join ininstead? Plus, you should go to Johnny D’s before it gets sold and turns into overpriced apartments or another goddamn frozen yogurt shop in Davis Square.
