Boston Calling 2015
After covering the spring concert here, and boycotting the fall version because they wouldn’t respond to our inquiry for press passes, it’s time to start talking about Boston Calling again. This week they have announced the lineup for the three day festival spanning May 22-May 24th. This year’s biggest names include Beck, The Pixies, Ben Harper, Tenacious D, TV on the Radio, and Beef Wellington favorite My Morning Jacket.
As Beef/Cam will tell you, if you have a chance to go see My Morning Jacket, you should drop what you are doing and be there right now. I’ve never seen Beck or TV on the Radio live but I would be most eager to see the two of them translate their music to a live concert. Other acts scheduled to perform in Boston this spring include Vance Joy who one day I randomly downloaded his song “Riptide” for free from itunes and seemingly the next day it was everywhere, the hip hop duo Run the Jewels, who just this week I was told I need to check out their new album, and Marina and the Diamonds who are returning for the second time. Gerard Way, who used to be the front man for My Chemical Romance will be there probably providing music, maybe doing standup, who the hell knows really? And Jason Isbell ,who I don’t think we’ve wrote about but is still an Empty Bottle Evenings recommend, will be there providing his alt-country stylings as well.
It’s a pretty solid lineup even if it may not compare with the other big festivals this year. Some of the artists like My Morning Jacket, Vance Joy, and Tame Impala will be playing Boston and Coachella/Bonnaro/Governors Ball/etc with a huge overlap among all of the big festivals. I’d like to go to Bonnaroo to see Florence & the Machine, Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar, Ben Folds, Dawes, and weird crap like Tears for Fears and Ed Helms rocking a banjo. It would be rad (radical dude!) to go to Coachella and see AC/DC, Bad Religion, Andrew McMahon, Desparecidos, Reverend Horton Heat, and slew of other bands. And the Governors Ball has The Black Keys, Ryan Adams, The Decemberists and a bunch of the bands playing the other shows too.
You’re going to have some better headliners and some worse at each place, so just go to whatever one you live closest to and you’ll probably find more bands that you like by just showing up early. The Boston undercard includes Tove Lo, Chet Faker, The Lone Bellow, Sharon Van Etten, Jungle, Mo, Grizfolk, DMA’S, The Ballroom Thieves, and Krill. In that list someone will probably be awesome, and if we find that out first we will make you read about it.
