Bonnie “Prince” Billy & Matt Sweeney | Superwolf
When it comes to Will Oldham I showed up pretty late to the party. In fact this is the first time I’ve listened to any of his records in depth, but holy shit is this a great album. I’ve had it in pretty heavy rotation for the past month and it just gets better with each listen. It’s been out for about 10 years and I don’t know how no one told me about it up until now. The lyrics are great, the guitar riffs are great… it’s just an all around excellent album.
The first track, My Home Is The Sea, opens up with what may be the best line in any song ever written: “I have often said I wish I was dead in a sharks mouth”. The second I heard that one I was sold on the album. I know it sets the bar pretty high right off the bad but the rest of the album delivers.
I don’t know a whole lot about Matt Sweeney but it seems like he brought a lot to this record. The interplay between their two voices is very powerful and the guitar work is a little more driving than you would normally expect out of Oldham. It’s mellow but kind of rocking at the same time, if that makes any sense. I’m not really sure what I was doing in 2005 but I should have been listening to this record and you should have been also… seriously go buy Superwolf.
