BOSTON

BOSTON CONCERT PICKS: 6/19 – 6/22

Friday – 6/19

Flogging Molly and Gogol Bordello @ Blue Hills Bank Pavilion – 7PM – If you think punk is boring try mixing it with traditional Irish or Gypsy Music and see where that takes you. I’ve seen Flogging Molly live before and they are amazing and I hear everyone should go see Gogol Bordello live so I will be there. And square.

The Sheila Divine @ The Sinclair – 8PM – Come out and see this local favorite on what is pretty much guaranteed to be either a Final Tour or a Reunion Tour. Probably Both.

Caravan of Thieves @ Johnny D’s Uptown Somerville – 7PM – It’s hard to describe the eclectic sounds of Caravan of Thieves but “Gypsy Swingin’ Serenading Fire-Breathing Circus Freaks” is one way. I guess it’s just that kind of night in Boston. Interesting note: I went to elementary school with violinist Ben Dean and he was incredibly talented back then and looks like he picked up a few things in the last two decades since I saw him.

6/20

The Helio Sequence @ Brighton Music Hall – 730PM – The duo brings the indie rock. Fun Fact, their drummer played on Modest Mouse’s Good News for People Who Love Bad News.

Oh Honey @ The Red Room (Berklee) – 8PM- This duo is a mixed gender folk-pop indie gaining national exposure over a short passage of time. Or, in less annoying terms, it’s a guy and a girl singing some songs together, you may have heard one of them “Be Okay” on some TV shows or commercials. It will drive you nuts and you may hurt someone.

6/21

Kate Diaz @ Various Places Around Boston – Recent high school graduate and most impressive person at a dinner party in ten years will be singing and strumming at the Charles River Bistro at the Hatch Shell from 1-2pm then at the Aquarium from 3-4pm. WHAT? She will be attending Harvard and Berklee this fall. I’ll be sitting on the couch applying for dead end jobs? How about you?

Tim Barry w/ Northcote and Allison Weiss @ The Middle East Cambridge (Upstairs) – 7PM- – If you don’t know Tim Barry, you may know his friends: Frank Turner, Chuck Ragan, Brian Fallon (Gaslight Anthem), Ben Nichols (Lucero). He’s another former punk frontman (Avail) gone on to find the folkier side of music. Him and his acoustic will bring you some folk-punk at a value price.

Meanwhile I saw Northcote earlier this year opening for The Gaslight Anthem and they were pretty damn good. They have a huge boner for Springsteen and their acoustic work is also solid.

As for Allison Weiss, she’s one of those kickstarter stars but also toured Europe with Lou Reed so she’s way more interesting them I’ll ever be. Here, take a listen to her power pop stylings:
