St. James & The Apostles | Via Dolorosa
Every so often I flip to the back of a Rolling Stone to check out the Top 40 and I don’t know why because it never fails to disappoint me. Nearly everything on there is complete shit. It’s the same story with the vast majority of radio stations and MTV, as well. Sure you’ll get some of the classics now and then but for the most part anything new is going to be garbage. It’s sad but I get it. It’s the same reason why Everybody Loves Raymond was one of the most popular shows on TV. As it is with most other things in this life, it’s all about the dollar signs. Bland, generic shit is just easier to peddle to the masses. However, I assure you there is good stuff out there, more than you probably think… but you’ve got to do some digging for it.
Philly’s own St. James & The Apostles are one of these hidden gems. They’re a heavy hitting, psych-rock power trio and arguably one of the best live bands in Philly right now. Their recently released sophomore album ‘Via Dolorosa‘ will blast your dick off. It’s heavy, it’s dirty, it’s unapologetic, it’s the sounds of a working band banging out tracks in a basement. There’s no slick studio wizardry, auto-tune or million dollar recording equipment to hide behind… it’s fucking real. All the bland, radio friendly, Maroon 5-esque ‘rock‘ bands can go fuck themselves…. as far as I’m concerned this is what real rock is and always will be.
Their record release show is this friday and trust me these guys are a band that you need to see live.
