Recap: Dr. Dog and The Districts at Hall of Music Williamsburg
It’s a rare occasion that I venture to NY to see a show but in this case it was well worth the trip. Dr. Dog took the stage at the Music Hall of Williamsburg for the second night of their 8 show run in New York. It had been quite awhile since I’d been able to catch Dr. Dog live and it had been even longer since I’d been to an all ages show. I realized two things as I sat having a drink in the balcony, gazing down upon the sea of teenage kids below. One: I have now become the old beer swilling guy in the balcony at the all ages show and Two: I was always meant to be that guy. I’m not sure how I never saw the appeal when I was 16 but let’s face it, it’s amazing. As fun as it is being smashed up against 100 other sweaty teenage kids, struggling for each breath and fighting heat stroke… comfortably getting tanked from a safe distance is a thousand times better. But I don’t know maybe I’m just old.
The Districts opened up the night and let me tell you, they were out for blood. I’ve heard a lot of buzz about these guys lately and they live up to the hype. Hailing from outside of Philly, they look like they’re not that far out of high school but holy shit they do not sound like it. The set was packed with epic folk rock jams start to finish. As excited as I was for Dr. Dog I could have watched these guys play 10 more. It was hard to believe songs with such depth were coming from guys who can’t be far past 21.
After the Districts left the stage Dr. Dog once again proved why they’re one of the best bands to come out of Philly in recent history. It was a powerful performance and the Music Hall of Williamsburg is the perfect venue to see a band like Dr. Dog. It really facilitated a very intimate performance, which is how you need to see these guys. There was singing, there was dancing, there was all that good shit. To top it off they played all the classics as well as quite a few deep cuts. Doing an 8 show run in one city is a bold move but judging from the response on Saturday night they’re going to have no problem pulling it off.

[…] been digging The Districts since I saw them open for Dr. Dog a few weeks back and as I mentioned before I was pretty blow away by their performance. These dudes are young but they don’t play like it. They’ve got a great folk […]
