My Morning Jacket | The Waterfall
It’s been over three years but My Morning Jacket has finally released a new album… and I don’t really know what to make of it. To be fair I’ve only listened to it a few times although I can’t see it growing on at this point. I’ve loved everything MMJ has put out up until this point, so I guess it was only a matter of time. They can’t all be home runs but god damn it I really wanted another home run.
Don’t get me wrong, none of the tracks on The Waterfall are downright terrible buuuut none of them that memorable either. Overall it’s kind of mediocre and a little reminiscent of Jim James solo album, which I wasn’t too crazy about either. It’s just a little to mellow for my taste. If that’s what you’re into you’ll probably love this album but it’s got none of the diversity that has defined past MMJ records. Every track blends together with Tropics being the only track that really stood out to me.
Ironically, I could see this as being the album that finally breaks these guys fully into the mainstream… and then I’ll just be another one of those assholes that’s always saying “I liked these guys before they were cool”. But you know what? I’m fine with that, it’s been a long time coming and if any band out there deserves recognition more than MMJ that’s news to me.
