Wood-Announcement

Motorola adds more wood options to custom Moto X, also slashes price

It seems as though each of the major manufacturers in the phone market all have their own trademark build material for their flagship phones. HTC has the all aluminum One series, Samsung owns the plastic/faux leather market, Apple made glass on both sides of the phone popular, and Motorola even has Kevlar. Well today Motorola added another feather to its cap in the way of the customizable Moto X. Though you have been able to customize the handset when you ordered it from day one, it wasn’t until months later you could order one with the Bamboo back. Now they have added three more wood options to the custom order website. The new options pictured above from left to right are ebony, walnut, and teak.

The bamboo model above has been available for a little while now but carried a hefty fee until today, I think Motorola realized the original $100 premium they were charging  was more than the market was willing to pay. So upon making the new finishes available, they also significantly dropped the price of the option to just $25. If I were in the market for this phone the prospect of me getting a wooden back of some sort on it just went up about 95% based off the price drop alone. I think they have a pretty distinct style to them and I hope these options come to more of their phones in the future. The fact they are made out of real wood means no two will look exactly the same regardless of the finish, and you can have a little clearer conscience when it comes time to recycle it knowing half the outer shell could be turned to mulch.
