Futurebirds | Hampton’s Lullaby
If you’re into psychedelic country rock, think you might be, aren’t sure what it is or you’re currently stoned this album is probably for you. Hailing from Athens, GA these guys are relatively new to the scene but they’ve been gaining a lot of steam lately. I’m not sure if the name is a witty reference to eggs or has some sort of deeper meaning but I’m into it.
They’ve got a lot of stuff going on: pedal steel, guitars, banjo, bass, drums and usually about 3 people singing…. it sounds like a potential mess but they pull it off with ease.
Ya I know one guy has a porn mustache but it works, in fact if they all had porn mustaches I’d still be cool with that.
The first thing that I noticed after I bought this album was that the opening track is called ‘Johnny Utah’. Now I’m not positive about this one but I’m pretty sure it’s a reference to Point Break and if you haven’t seen Point Break yet go watch POINT BREAK RIGHT NOW. Man I could and probably should write a whole post about it….. there’s all the ingredients that make for a classic film: Gary Busey, Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze as the leader of a gang of bank robbers disguised as ex presidents that escape by surfing. I don’t want to spoil anything but it ends with Swayze shouting “THERE’S NO WAY I CAN HANDLE A CAGE MAN” and then surfing to his death in the biggest wave Australia has ever seen.
Here’s a few of my favorite tracks:
